To start off the season, 23 members of the CA Speech and Debate Program attended the UK Season Opener online from September 8th through September 11th. Several CA students broke past preliminary rounds and we had several notable performances. Rehan Mahmood advanced to triple octofinals in Lincoln Douglas. In Public Forum, the team of Jain & Ravulapati broke to triple octofinals, the team of Jung & Levin broke to double octofinals, and the team of Hu & Zhang advanced to quarterfinals and secured their first gold bid of the season! Ayan Jung also placed 10th in speaker points. Kajal Parmar advanced to semifinals in Extemporaneous speaking. In Original Oratory Isabel Chang took home 6th place. Finally, Hailey Zhang was our overall champion in Info securing a TOC bid!!!!
While the rest of the team stayed in NC to compete virtually at UK, 5 members of Cary Academy Speech and Debate braved Texas' Grapevine Classic this past weekend from September 8th through September 10th. Riley Ro was a Double Octofinalist in Varsity Lincoln Douglas as well as the 10th place speaker and Derek Han progressed to Octofinals in Varsity Lincoln Douglas and was the 12th place speaker. Eight Cary Academy students traveled to Phoenix and Mesa Arizona over the week of June 10th thru 17th to compete in the annual National Speech and Debate Association's National Tournament. CA had an outstanding showing with six of those eight students reaching the elimination rounds in either their primary or supplemental events. Rebecca Liu was the 7th Place Speaker out of 280 entries in Lincoln Douglas Debate, as well as reaching the 10th round of competition to finish 28th overall. The Public Forum team of Ayan Jung and Adam Levin were the only team to go undefeated in the preliminary rounds finishing as the top seed of 276 entries. They reached the 9th round of competition finishing 37th overall. Based on these perfomances Cary Academy was recognized as a Debate School of Honor which recognize the top 40 schools in the nation in debate events at the National Tournament. This was CA's 5th time earning this distinction. Hailey Zhang reached the octafinal round of Informative Speaking finishing 45th out of 268 entries. Kajal Parmar reached the semifinal round of Extemp Commentary finishing 14th out of 317 entries. Asha Gupta reached the quarterfinal round of Original Spoken Word Poetry finshing 19th out of 242 entries. Hamza Adnan and Fiona Hu also competed in World Schools Debate.
11 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Louisville Kentucky over Memorial Day weekend to compete in the annual Grand National Tournament hosted by the National Catholic Forensic League. Kajal Parmar was an Octafinalist in Declamation and the team of Ayan Jung and Adam Levin reached the Double Octafinal round of Public Forum Debate before being eliminated on a split decision to the eventual tournament runners-up.
From April 27th to 29th three members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team competed online in the National Speech and Debate Association's Last Chance Qualifier attempting to qualify for the National Speech and Debate tournament. Derek Han reached the second elimnation round placing in the top 64 of 197 entries in Lincoln Douglas Debate.
Five members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Lexington Kentucky over the weekend of April 14th thru 17th to participate in the Tournament of Champions hosted annually by the University of Kentucky. The team of Fiona Hu and Rebeccia Liu reached the Double Octafinal round of the Silver division of Public Forum Debate before being eliminated by the eventual tournament champions on a split decision. Hailey Zhang was also a semifinalist in Informative Speaking.
31 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team competed in the speech and debate portion of the Carolina East District tournament on CA's campus over the weekend of March 25th and 26th. After an intense two days of competition 10 Cary Academy students ended up qualifying to compete at the National Speech and Debate Association's National Tournament to he held in Arizona in June. This is also the 23rd straight year CA has had an Extemper qualify for Nationals and the 11th straight year qualifying in LD. 40 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate Team traveled to Charlotte over the weekend of March 4th thru 5th to compete in the annual Tarheel Forensic League State Championship hosted by Myers Park High School. CA finished the weekend as the runner up in overall sweepstakes and for the second year in a row was the champion in Speech sweepstakes. The team's performance was led by individual state championships in four events: Aida Lo in Declamation, Andrew Lim in Dramatic Interpretation, Isabel Chang & Samantha Perez in Duo Interpretation, and Rehan Mahmood & Yul Choi in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate. 40 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Apex Friendship High School on Saturday February 25th to compete in the 6th and final Dogwood Speech and Debate tournament of the year. Cary Academy ended the season as the top peforming school in the Dogwood League winning the Carole Hamilton School of Excellence Award for the eight year in a row. CA was also recognized as the inagural winner of the first Founder's Award which recognizes a school's cumaltive performance at Dogwood tournaments from year to year. In Junior Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate CA had 8 competitors reach the elimnation rounds, the most of any school. Rebecca Liu advanced all the way to the final round where she prevailed on a 4-1 decision to be named tournament champion. CA was one ballot away from closing out the tournament as Allen Huang advanced all the way to the semifinal round before being eliminated on a spilt 2-1 decision. Dana Jhong was an ocatafinalist and Sarah Hussain reached the double octafinal round before being eliminated in a coach over. Simren Mehta, Patrick Liu, Chris Gillham, and Anya Lunari were all triple octafinalists. Rebecca was the 2nd Speaker, Allen the 3rd, and Dana was 4th. In Varsity LD, Derek Han reach the Quadruple Octafinal round. The Varsity PF team of Fiona Hu and Ella Zhang were semifinalists in the round robin held before the tournament, and reached the quadruple octafinal round in the tournament proper. Andrew Lim was an octafinalist in Dramatic Interpretation and Callie Chang was an octafinalist in Informative Speaking.
