The CA Speech and Debate Team traveled to Sand Hills Community College in Pinehurst on Saturday November 15th to compete in the tournament hosted by SandHoke Early College. The team was the sweepstakes runners up placing second overall as a school. The team's performance was spearhead by close outs in two events. Bharat Modhi and Diviya Vijayakumar closed out Extemporaneous Speaking placing first and second respectively. CA took the top 3 slots in Varsity LD as well with Grace Jin placing first, Nyal Patel second, and Grey Spector third. It was the second tournament in a row Jin has won, and the third straight tournament CA has won Varsity LD. CA took 3 of the 6 places in Novice LD as well with Julia Gong placing second, Kiera Tie third, and Harrison Zhang sixth. The team had a great showing in PF as well with Daisy Gray and Maaya Dev finishing fifth in Varsity, William Fowler and Khushi Surana finishing fourth in JV, and Alex Knott and Riya Thomas fourth in Novice. Jack Stafford was second in Varsity Congressional Debate.Other speech placements included Diviya Vijayakumar placing fifth in Impromptu Speaking, Kendall Bell placing sixth in Extemp, and Evan Erhardt placing seventh in Dramatic Interpretation. CA competed in the third annual Impvitational hosted by Cary High School on November 8. The team had a very successful day finishing third overall in sweepstakes. The teams effort was spearheaded by a sweep of Varsity Congressional Debate with CA winning both chambers. Jack Stafford was the champion of Chamber 1, and Nate Jones was victorious in Chamber 2. Leighton Boiar was 5th in Chamber 1 as well. In Lincoln Douglas Debate Grace Jin was 1st in Varsity, Enoch Kuan was 2nd in Novice, and Tylor Moore was 6th in JV. The team of Kirstin Andrejko and Sami Frankel were 2nd in Varsity PF. In the speech events Davis Braswell was 5th in Extemp, and CA took five of the six places in Declamation- Eesha Sachdeva was 1st, Jessica Jenkens 3rd, Maggie Meymandi 4th, Max Nunez 5th, and Taylor Timinskis 6th. Six Cary Academy students traveled to Gainesville Florida the during the last week of October to compete in the Blue Key Tournament hosted by the University of Florida. CA had an excellent showing with all of its entries in the regular tournament advancing to the elimination rounds in their respective events. CA won Novice LD at this tournament for the third straight year with Julia Gong winning the final round on a 3-0 decision. CA had 2 of the 4 in semifinals with Gong advancing over Sullivan Morgus, and had 4 of the 8 in quarter-finals with Gong advancing over Chelsea Fang, and Hope Ferris losing on a split 2-1 decision as well. Ferris was the top seed in the tournament going 6-0 in prelims, and CA had the top three seeds in the tournament through prelims. Nate Jones advanced to the semifinals of Cogressional Debate after placing 5th in his preliminary chamber and just missed advancing to finals by only 1 rank. Bill Peebles competed in the invitation only Round Robin before the regular tournament began where he competed against seven other top extempers. Bill won the majority of his head to head match ups finishing with a 4-3 record against the other competitors.
Nine students traveled to Hope Mills on November 1st to compete in the Douglad McLaurin Invitational hosted by South View High School. CA had an excellent showing with Spencer Reed and Leighton Boair placing 2nd and 3rd respectively in Congressional Debate, Diviya Vijayakumar placing 3rd in both Extemporaneous Speaking, and Jimmy McShane placing 4th in Extemp.
