8 members of the Cary Academy Speech & Debate team traveled to Gainesville Florida over the weekend of October 26th to 28th to compete in Florida Blue Key tournament hosted by the University of Florida. The team had an outstanding showing with 5 of the 8 students competing reaching the elimination rounds. Emily Wang and Brian Wei reached the elimination rounds of Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate. Brian was eliminated in the Octafinal round losing a split 2-1 decision. Emily advanced all the way to the final round where she emerged victorious on a 3-2 decision to become the champion of Novice LD. This was the second year in a row that CA has won this title, and the 5th time overall. In Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate Will Aarons and Jessica Zhong both reached the elimination rounds with Will losing a split 2-1 decision in Double Octas, and Jessica advancing to the Octafinal round before being eliminated. Saajan Patel was a semifinalist in Congressional Debate after placing sixth in his preliminary chamber.
The second Dogwood Speech and Debate League tournament of the season was held Saturday October 20th at Enloe High School in Raleigh. 82 members of the Cary Academy speech and debate team made the short trip inside the beltline to compete against students from 20 other schools in their respective events. CA turned in a dominant performance winning first place sweepstakes for the 3rd time this year. The team's effort was led by closeouts of Declamation (top 2), Extemporaneous Speaking (top 2) and Novice LD (top 3); as well as placing first in two out of the three chambers of Congress and second in the third. Students competed against a field that consisted of 153 schools from 27 states. 5 Cary Academy students reached the elimination rounds in their respective events led by Grace Wissink and Ava Autry who both broke in Program of Oral Interpretation. Grace went on to reach the final round of POI placing 5th overall. Becca Segal and Claudia Zimmerman both broke in Extemporaneous Speaking reaching the quarterfinals before being eliminated, and RJ Jain was a semifinalist in Congressional Debate.
The Dogwood Speech and Debate League season began on Saturday October 6th as 51 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Jack Britt High school in Fayetteville to compete against 20 other schools from throughout North Carolina. CA won first place sweepstakes on the basis of strong performances in both speech and debate events. Highlights of the team's performance include having 3 students reach the finals of both Declamation and Original Oratory, closing out the top 2 spots and 4 of the top 5 in Novice PF and the top 6 spots in Novice LD, and finishing 1st in both Declamation and Program of Oral Interpretation.
