The Cary Academy Speech and Debate team was out in full force at the 5th Dogwood League tournament of the year hosted by Cardinal Gibbons High School as 76 students made the short trip to Raleigh to compete. The team was the overall sweepstakes champion for the 5th time this year at a Dogwood tournament due to impressive performances in a wide range of events. The following student placements contributed to the team's victory:
Jonathan Segal, 1st Place, Student Congress Chamber B Jessica Zhong, 1st Place, Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate Becca Segal, 2nd Place, Declamation Divya Vijayakumar, 2nd Place, Extemporaneous Speaking Alex Knott & Riya Thomas, 2nd Place, Varsity Public Forum Debate Jack Stafford, 2nd Place, Student Congress Chamber A RJ Jain, 2nd Place, Student Congress Chamber B Oonagh Stevans, 3rd Place, Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate Georgia Dietz, 3rd Place, Student Congress Chamber A Suki Bristol, 3rd Place, Student Congress Chamber B Evan Ehrhardt, 3rd Place, Original Oratory Davis Braswell, 4th Place, Extemporaneous Speaking Matthew Schaffer & Olivia Halferty, 4th Place, Varsity Public Forum Debate Carson Baker & Finn Kerns, 5th Place, Novice Public Forum Debate Anna Ibrahim, 5th Place, Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate Elena Huang & Adithi Sundaram, 6th Place, Novice Public Forum Debate Cade Spector, 6th Place, Extemporaneous Speaking The Cary Academy Speech and Debate team participated in the third annual Cavalier Classic hosted by Durham Academy on the weekend of January 14th and 15th. 36 members of the team competed to win swords by becoming the champion of their respective events and at the end of two days of competition Cary Academy brought home three swords- two from Evan Ehrhardt for Original Oratory and Program of Oral Interpretation, and another from Grace Jin who won her second sword in Lincoln Douglas Debate. CA also had several other students place in their respective events. In Student Congress Jack Stafford was 3rd, Ben Lipson 6th, and Cade Spector reached the final round. In Extemporaneous Speaking Davis Braswell was 4th, and Danielle Carr 7th. Evan Ehrhardt was joined in the outrounds of OO by Grace Wissink who placed 3rd, and Tommy Hugus who reached the semifinals. Katherine Lin was 5th in Informative Speaking. In Public Forum Debate CA had 4 teams reach the elimination rounds the most of any school. The team of Khushi Surana and Mason Reece reached the semifinals before losing, while the team of Isaac Fan and Tori Borlase were eliminated in quarters after being closed out by Reece and Surana. The team of Arm Kassam and Matthew Schaeffer were closed out in Octas by Fan and Borlase, and the team of Alex Knott and Riya Thomas were eliminated in Octas as well. In Lincoln Douglas Debate CA had the most students clear as well with six competitors reaching the elimination rounds. Ethan Ng, Anthony Guzzo, Viraj Shah, and Oonagh Stevans reached the Octafinals, and Chelsea Fang reached the quarterfinals, in addition to Jin. The team placed 2nd in overall sweepstakes on the basis of the strength of these individual student performances.
