Six members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to New York City the weekend of October 14th- 16th to compete in the New York City Invitational hosted by the Bronx High School of Science. Jack Stafford and Ben Lipson both advanced to the semifinals of Student Congress after placing 4th in their preliminary chambers. Jack advanced to finals after finishing in the top six in his semis chamber, and went on to place 2nd overall in the final round.
48 members of the CA Speech & Debate team traveled to Fayetteville on Saturday October 22nd to compete in the second Dogwood Speech & Debate League tournament of the year hosted by Cumberland Polytechnic High School. The team turned in an outstanding showing placing first in overall sweepstakes and winning all four divisions of debate- Novice and Varsity LD as well as Novice and Varsity PF. CA closed out both Novice LD and PF with Will Aarons going undefeated and placing first in Novice LD, Mesha Mumford placing second, and Sydney Nguyen placing third. Will King also had an impressive showing placing 5th. In Novice PF Tim Werner and Ben Logel were undefeated placing first, Helen Chen and Shanlle Jayawickcreme second, Elena Huang and Adithi Sundaram third, and Luke Johnson and James Taylor 4th. In Varsity LD CA had 7 of the top 8 competitors with Anna Ibrahim going undefeated to place first, Oonagh Stevans third, Chelsea Fang fourth, Milen Patel fifth, Krishan Guzzo sixth, Grace Jin seventh, and Viraj Shah eighth. In Varsity PF Alex Knott and Riya Thomas went undefeated and placed first, and Hern Lim and Isaac Fan placed 4th. Johnathan Segal was the champion of Student Congress Chamber B, and Aiden Sher was the Best Novice in Chamber A. In speech three CA students advanced to final rounds with Eesha Sachdeva placing second in Oratory, Madisen Placzkowski fourth in Extemp, and Brett Alberse fifth in OI.
32 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Beaufort the weekend of October 1st to compete in the first Dogwood Speech & Debate League tournament of the season at East Carteret High School. The team emerged as overall sweepstakes champion with outstanding performances in a wide variety of events contributing to the overall team victory.
