team rules
Violations of these rules can result in suspension of a student's ability to attend tournaments
1. No student may be released to leave a tournament with anyone other than the student’s parents.
Any exception must be communicated to the coach in writing.
2. If a student must miss a tournament s/he/they has signed up for, at least one to two weeks advance notice (depending on the tournament rules) is required to avoid a penalty fee. REMEMBER THAT OTHER STUDENTS ARE AFFECTED BY YOUR DECISIONS. It may be too late to let someone who wants to go know that he or she may have a slot. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DROP FEE CHARGES.
3. All team members will travel together to and from the tournament, unless permission is obtained from a coach via a written request from parents. Administrative approval is also required.
4. Unruly behavior, loud talking, etc. may not take place. You are ladies and gentlemen representing your parents, community, school, and your coaches. This rule applies to tournament sites, eating places, hotel sites, etc.
5. All individual event materials and debate cases should be in your coach's hands at least one week prior to competition or you may be prevented from participating in that tournament.
6. To participate in the NSDA District Tournament, a student must be an NSDA member. Students become eligible to join NSDA after earning 25 competition points (NSDA rule). They must also be in good academic standing at the school.
7. Members of the team should stay together at all times, or at least in groups of three or more and have permission to be separated from the group. This is necessary for safety reasons as well as for the convenience of the coach/chaperone.
8. While on overnight trips students should not be in any hotel room other than their own. Group work may be conducted in the lobby, with coach permission.
9. A round of competition may be forfeited only with the permission of a coach.
10. Competitors observe elimination rounds when not participating in them unless they have permission otherwise.
You are not“finished” simply because you have been eliminated.
11. No student may be outside his/her room after curfew without the permission of the adult in charge. In order to compete effectively, you must have sufficient rest. Likewise, individuals should assume that other students staying in the
room want to sleep. Therefore, you must be in bed with the lights out at the designated time. Students who disregard this rule will not compete in future tournaments.
12. Students must be on time for all rounds and all assigned travel arrangements. We will leave without you.
13. All school rules apply. Violations of these rules are considered violations of school policy and will be dealt with accordingly. Once at the tournament, students are responsible for getting to their rounds on their own.
14. On overnight trips, students must be up, packed, breakfast eaten and ready to depart at the designated time.
15. Parents who have committed to judge and who cancel at the last minute, depart prematurely, or fail to show up for assigned rounds may be liable to pay any fees the team is assessed .
Any exception must be communicated to the coach in writing.
