19 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team (the most ever) competed virtually over the week of June 13th thru 19th in the National Speech and Debate Tournament hosted online by the National Speech and Debate Association. 11 of the 19 students competing reached the elimination rounds in either their primary or supplemental event, also a record. Casey Powell placed 14th out of 363 competitors in Lincoln Douglas Debate after advancing to the 13th round of competition. Casey is now automatically qualified for next year's national tournament, and is the first auto qualifier in CA history. Jay Sagrolikar advanced to the Semifinals of the Senate of Congressional Debate after winning his preliminary chamber. Jay placed 5th in his semifinal chamber placing him in the top 20 out of 191 competitors. In World Schools Debate five CA students advanced to the elimination rounds with Aryan Nair and Natasha Sachar reaching the Quadruple Octafinal Round(Top 79), Han Zhang and Emily Wang reaching the Triple Octafinal Round(Top 64), and Allie Chandler the Double Octafinal Round(Top 32). Katherine He advanced to the Quartefinal round of Informative Speaking placing her in the top 30 out of 324 competitors. Alex Lim also advanced to the Quarterfinal round in Humorous Interpretation placing him in the top 30 out of 312 competitors. Alex and Katherine are the first Cary Academy speech students to ever reach the Quarterfinal round of the National Tournament. JR Cobb reached the Double Octafinal round in United States Extemporaneous Speaking placing him in the top 102 of 344 competitors, and Sophia Liu also reached the Double Octafinal round in Informative Speaking. Sophia also advanced to the Semifinal round of Prepared Prompt Speaking where she finished in 13th place in a field of 399 competitors. Jordan Miller reached the Double Octafinal round of Prose reading placing her in the top 143 out of 541 competitors. CA was recognized as a school of Honor in both Debate and Speech meaning that it ranked in the top 40 of the 1316 schools competing at Nationals in both the debate and speech events.
