46 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Fairfax, Virginia over the weekend of December 2nd and 3rd to participate in the Patriot Games Classic hosted by George Mason University. The team had a hugely successful weekend placing 6th in overall sweepstakes out of 108 schools. The team was led by senior Evan Ehrhardt who placed 7th in individual sweepstakes after breaking in all five of his events. Evan placed 6th in Prose after reaching the final round, and he was also a semifinalist in Dramatic Interpretation as well as in Duo Interpretation with partner Grace Wissink. He also reached the quarterfinals of Poetry and Program of Oral Interpretation. Other students reaching the elimination rounds in speech were Grace Wissink who also reached the quarterfinals of Dramatic Interpretation, Caroline Spancake who reached the quarterfinals in both Original Oratory and Informative Speaking, Margalit Mermelstein who was a quarterfinalist in Program of Oral Interpretation, and Jonathan Segal and Cade Spector who were quarterfinalists in Extemporaneous Speaking. Cade and Jonathan were also among the five CA students to break to the semifinals in Student Congress in addition to Ben Lipson, Saajan Patel, and Lexi Kleine. Ben and Cade advanced to the final of Student Congress where they placed 6th and 13th respectively. In Public Forum Debate 4 CA teams reached the elimination rounds with Arm Kassam and Matthew Schaeffer reaching the Double Octafinal round and the teams of Tori Borlase and Mason Reece, Riya Thomas and Isaac Fan, and Alex Knott and Sam Chow reached the Triple Octafinal round. Alex and Sam were a perfect 5-0 as well as the top seed of 171 teams after prelims. In Lincoln Douglas Debate Sullivan Morgus reached the Double Octafinal round.
