18 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Charlotte over the weekend of January 6th thru 8th to participate in the 50th Laird Lewis Invitational hosted by Myers Park High School. The team had an outstanding showing placing first in Debate sweepstakes out of 25 schools representing 8 different states. This performance was based on strong showings across multiple divisons. In Varsity Public Forum Debate the team of Adam Levin and Ayan Jung reached the final round placing 2nd overall and the team of Fiona Hu and Ella Zhang recached the semifinals before being eliminated on a split decision. In Novice Public Forum Debate the team of Daphne DiFrancesco and Raya Jung reached the semifinal round before being eliminated on a split decision. In Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate Derek Han was the runner up after reaching the final round, and in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate CA had 3 of the 4 students in the semifinals. Anna Sophia Polge lost in the semifinals on a spilt decision and Rehan Mahmood was advanced over by Anjali Narahari. Anjali won the final round on a 2-1 decision to finish undefeated and as the tournament champion. In Varsity Congressional Debate Camryn Friedman advanced to the final round after placing fourth in her preliminary chamber placing 12th overall. In Dramatic Interpretation Asha Gupta placed 5th.
