27 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate competed virtually over the weekend of December 18th and 19th at the second annual Grey Matter Invitational. In Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate CA had 5 competitors reach the elimination rounds including the top two seeds and only undefeated debaters in the preliminary rounds. Simrem Mehta was eliminated in the octafinal round, Rebecca Liu and Annie Boyse were eliminated in the quarterfinal round, Riley Ro in the semifinal round; and Derek Han advanced to the final round were he was named the tournament runner up after losing on a split 2-1 decision. Rebecca Liu was the 3rd Place Speaker in Novice LD and Riley Ro was the 5th Place Speaker. In Novice Public Forum the team of Dillan Jagannath and Alex Liu reached the semifinal round and Dillan was the 3rd Place Speaker and Alex was 5th. Emma Zhang advanced to the final session of Congressional Debate where she placed 6th. In Declamation CA had four students reach the final round with Isabel Chang placing 1st and being recognized as the Top Novice, Hailey Zhang 2nd, Callie Chang 5th, and Sophia Lokitz 6th. CA also had 3 reach the final round of Impromptu Speaking. Isabel Chang was the Top Novice and placed 3rd, Annika Kadumpalli was 4th, and Tyler Smith was 6th.
