23 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to New Haven Connecticut over the weekend of September 15th -17th to compete in the Yale Invitational hosted by Yale University. Competing against students from 220 different schools from 30 states, 11 of the 23 students received recognition for their performance in their respective events. Evan Ehrhardt broke in both Dramatic Interpretation and Program of Oral Interpretation reaching the semifinals of DI placing 10th of 84 competitors, and the quarterfinals of POI placing in the top 25 of 73 competitors. Ben Lipson reached the semifinals of Student Congress after placing 6th in his preliminary chamber. Cade Spector placed 7th in his chamber and just missed out on clearing after boarding but failing to advance based on student vote. In Public Forum Debate the teams of Alex Knott and Matthew Schaeffer and Isaac Fan and Tori Borlase advanced to Triple Octafinals before being eliminated placing them in the top 64 of 271 teams. The team of Riya Thomas and Arm Kassam were the 66th seed and just missed clearing with a 4-2 preliminary record. Finally in Junior Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate all five of CA entries earned awards with Jessica Zhong reaching the semifinals, Cate Pitterle the Octafinals where she was advanced over by Jessica, and Will Aarons and Sydney Nguyen reaching Double Octafinals before being eliminated. In addition Will Aarons was the 5th place speaker, and Addie Esposito was the 7th place speaker. CA was the only school to have 4 students clear to the elimination rounds as well as the only school to have more than one of the top 10 speakers.
