13 members of the CA Speech & Debate team traveled to Winston-Salem over the weekend of September 9th-11th to compete in the National Earlybird Tournament hosted by Wake Forest University. 85 schools from 17 different states competed in this early season tournament, and CA students had strong exceptionally showings against this very competitive field. In Lincoln Douglas Debate all four of CA's entries reached the elimination rounds with Grace Jin advancing all the way to the final round were she placed 2nd after losing a split 2-1 decision. This was the first time a CA LDer has reached the final round of varsity LD at the National Earlybird. Grace was also the 2nd Place Speaker. CA had two of the four debaters in the semifinal round, and three of the eight in the quarterfinal round; more than any other school. Oonagh Stevans reached the semifinal round where she was advanced over by Jin, and Sullivan Morgus reached the quarterfinals where she was advanced over by Stevans. Chelsea Fang reached the Double Octafinal where she was eliminated by the eventual champion. In Public Forum Debate the teams of Matthew Schaeffer and Olivia Halferty and Alex Knott and Mason Reece reached the Triple Octafinal round where they both were eliminated on split 2-1 decisions. In Original Oratory Julia Gong reached the quarterfinal round where she just missed out on advancing placing 13th overall.
