15 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Philadelphia over the middle weekend of trimester break to compete in the Villiger Speech and Debate tournament hosted by St. Joseph's University. The team had an outstanding showing placing tenth overall as a school based on strong showings in a wide variety of events. Will Aarons was the top speaker and reached the semifinals of Lincoln Douglas Debate before being eliminated on a split 2-1 decision. In Public Forum Debate the team of Adithi Sundaram and Elena Huang reached the partial Double Octafinal round where they lost a spilt 2-1 decision. Saajan Patel advanced to the finals of Congressional Debate after placing in the top 7 of his preliminary chamber. Becca Segal reached the final round of Extemporaneous Speaking placing 5th, and also reached the final round of Duo Interpretation with Margalit Mermelstein where they placed 6th. Margalit was also a semifinalist in Original Oratory. Thank you to parents Bob Mermelstein and Jasmine Tang, as well as faculty member Robert Coven for judging and chaperoning the trip.
