86 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Southern Pines on Saturday September 28th to compete in the Pinecrest Open. For the third consecutive year the team finished the day as the overall Sweepstakes champions accumulating more points for student placements in the various events than any other school. The team's victory was spearheaded by a dominant showing in Lincoln Douglas Debate with Cary Academy competitors placing first in the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Novice divisions; and closing out the top 3 spots in Varsity LD and the top 5 spots in JV LD. In Varsity LD, Puj Adusumilli (4-0) was 1st, Laura Cabana 2nd, Nyal Patel 3rd, and Taylor Morin 6th. In JV LD, Henna Judge (4-0) was 1st, Sneha Adavni (4-0) 2nd, Grey Spector (4-0) 3rd, Colin Yeaney 4th, and Bailey Medley was 5th. In Novice LD, Grace Jin (4-0) was 1st, Kenny Cho was 4th, and Calvin Ma, Andrew Mangelsdorf, and Jack Maxfield had outstanding 3-1 records but failed to place based on speaker points. In Public Forum Debate the team of Daniel Kahn and Emilio Ochoa were 4th in Junior Varsity; and the varsity team of Daisy Gray and Jonathan Nunez, and the novice teams of Jilly Eder and Khushi Surana, and Rachel George and Jacob Henderson were 3-1 but failed to place based on speaker points. In Congressional Debate Matt Aupperle and Austin Lawrence both placed 4th in their respective varsity chambers; and Jack Stafford placed first in Novice Chamber A, while Charlotte Waechter was 2nd in Novice Chamber B, and Sebastian Kettner was 4th. In Extemporaneous Speaking Bill Peebles was 2nd in varsity, and Divya Vijaykumar was 2nd in novice. Jimmy McShane was 3rd in novice as well, and Alex Qiao 4th.
