Four members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Birmingham, Alabama the week of June 16-21 to compete in the National Forensic League National Speech and Debate Tournament. This tournament is the largest academic compeition in the world with over 2000 competitors from across the entire country, as well as from foreign countries such as China and Korea. Puj Adusumilli, Alexis Williams, Ted Waechter, and Bill Peebles represented both Cary Academy and the Tarheel East District at the week long competition in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Congressional Debate, and Extemporaenous Speaking respectively. Ted Waechter was a finalist in the Senate of Student Congress placing 17th overall out of approximately 200 competitors. He won his prelim chamber before advancing to semifinals where he tied for second. Alexis Williams reached the 9th round of Lincoln Douglas Debate placing her in the top 50 of over 250 competitors. Bill Peebles was a semifinalist in Extemp Commentary placing him in the top 15 of approximately 175 competitors. This was the seventh year in a row a Cary Academy student has earned recognition at the National Tournament and the thriteenth year in a row Cary Academy has competed in the tournament.
