17 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Gainesville Florida over the weekend of October 25-27 to compete in the Florida Blue Key tournament hosted by the University of Florida. The team had an outstanding showing placing 5th place in overall sweepstakes. For the second year in a row a CA debater was the champion in Novice Lincoln Douglas debate as Grace Jin won the tournament after finishing prelims as both the top seed and the top speaker. Christof Ketchmark reached the semifinals of Novice LD where he was advanced over by Jin after closing out the top half of the bracket. Pujith Adusumilli came within one round of of defending his title in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate after reaching the final round and placing second. CA was one ballot away from closing out the final round after Hannah Hubbard reached the semifinal round before losing on a 2-1 decision. Hannah was the top seed after compiling a perfect 6-0 record in prelims as well. CA closed out one quarterfinal in Varsity LD when Carrie Schellenberger was paired against Hubbard. Nyal Patel also reached the Octafinal round round in Varsity LD and Taylor Morin broke before losing in Double Octafinals. Patel was the 3rd Speaker, Hubbard 10th, and Adusumilli 11th. Bill Peebles broke in both US and International Extemp, reaching the final round in US placing 6th, and dropping in the semifinals of International.
