duke invitational 2020

41 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team competed virtually online in the second annual Duke Invitational hosted by Duke University over the weekend of September 19th to 20th. CA had an outstanding showing finishing second place as a team in  both overall sweepstakes and debate sweepstakes competing against 118 schools representing 24 states. The team's showing was based on the following individual student's placements:

NSDA Nationals 2020

11 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team competed in the National Speech and Debate Association's National Tournament held virtually during the week of June 15th thru 20th. The National Speech and Debate Tournament is the largest academic competition in the world and this year there were 6,659 competitors from 1322 different schools who competed.  Saajan Patel reached the finals of the Senate of Congressional Debate placing 12th overall out of 192 competitors. Jay Sagrolikar advanced to the quarterfinals of the House of Congressional Debate after placing first in his prelim chamber finishing in the top 120 of 464 competitors. Han Zhang was the 8th Place Speaker in World Schools Debate out of over 800 competitors, and his World Schools teams advanced to the elimination rounds were they were eliminated in the round of 64. Will Aarons was the 16th place speaker in Lincoln Douglas Debate out of a field of 254 competitors. Cary Academy was recognized as a Debate School of Honor to recognize the top 50 schools in the Debate events at the National Tournament. CA was also recognized for attending its 20th National Tournament as well. CA students have qualified to compete at Nationals every year since 2001, and this was the fourth straight year that a Cary Academy student has been recognized at the National Awards Assembly by placing in the top 14 in their respective events. Other CA students who competed at Nationals were Arielle Curtis in Dramatic Interpretation, Alex Lim in Humorous Interpretation, Sydney Tai in Program of Oral Interpretation, Bayla Sheshadri in Original Oratory, Vicky Jin in United States Extemporaneous Speaking, Anisha Rustogi in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking, and Emily Wang in Would Schools Debate.

20 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team competed in the Tarheel East NSDA District Tournament for Speech and Debate events hosted virtually over the weekend of April 25th-26th. CA had an outstanding showing finishing second overall in sweepstakes and adding an additional 9 qualifers to the National Tournament in June. Qualifying to the Nationals were:

dsdl novice championship 2020

29 members of the Cary Academy Speech participated in the DSDL Novice Championship on Saturday February 29th hosted on Cary Academy's campus. CA had an outstanding showing winning individual championships in five different events and emerging as the overall sweepstakes champion. CA students have now won DSDL Novice Championsips 17 times over the tournament's five year history, including winning Lincoln Douglas Debate for the last four years running. NSDa district Congress 2020

13 members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team competed on Saturday February 29th in the Tarheel East District National Qualifier in Congressional Debate hosted on CA's campus. After an intense day of competition CA emerged with two qualifiers to the National Tournament to be held in June as Cary Academy students were crowned the champions in both the House and Senate Chambers. Saajan Patel placed first in the Senate and Jay Sagrolikar  placed 1st in the House each qualifying to Nationals for the second straight year. Both Jay and Ritvik Nalamothu placed first in their preliminary chambers to advance to the final session of House where Ritvik finished as the fifth alternate to Nationals. This is the ninth straight year CA has qualified for nationals in Congressional Debate, including six straight years were multiple students have qualified.

66 members of the CA Speech and Debate competed in the sixth and final Dogwood League tournament of the year hosted by Apex Friendship High School on February 22nd. For the fifth time in six league tournaments this season Cary Academy emerged as the overall sweepstakes champion based on the following students strong performances in their respective events:

As this was the final Dogwood League tournament of the year honors and awards were presented based on performances throughout the season at all Dogwood tournaments. For the fifth straight year Cary Academy was recognized with the Carole Hamilton Award which regognizes the school which accumulates the most sweepstakes points at the six league tournaments throughout the season. Six members of the Cary Academy Speech and Debate team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia over the the weekend of January 24-26 to compete in the Barkley Forum for High Schools hosted by Emory University. Saajan Patel and Jay Sagrolikar both advanced to the semifinals of Congressional Debate after finishing first and third in their prelim chambers respectively placing them in the 54 of 152 competitors.
